A new week, a new post! Recently, we caught up with co-director, Ken Higgins, and asked him to answer some questions for us. Here's what he had to say: How long have you worked at The Town School? I have worked at Town for 23 years and I still find new things to love about this school each year. N-8 students are always interesting and inspiring! Besides being a faculty member, you have other connections to Town, right? Yes – Town roots run deep for my whole family! I have been a division head for SummerSault for many years and my daughter, Emma, is an alum of The Town School and went to SummerSault where she learned to swim and later became a CIT. My wife also taught at Town for many years. Now that they have both moved on to their new schools, I’m completely in charge of maintaining the Town-Higgins love affair. So you work with older and younger children...what do you love about camp for the younger kids? I love that camp is just centered around the idea of having fun for both the kids and the grown ups. I teach older students during the school year, and I really enjoy the shift to working with younger children during the summer — I get to re-enjoy SummerSault traditions through their eyes. What is something that we might not know about you? Three things: I have black belts in Jujitsu and Aikido, I am a very good cook, and, in the summers, I try to play Bach for an hour a day. One thing you definitely do know about me is that during SummerSault I can be counted on for a loud Hawaiian shirt and wry joke. Hello and welcome to SummerSault at The Town School's blog! We can't wait to post about our exciting summer so that you can feel a part of the fun, even when you're not able to be inside the classrooms. For now, we would like to introduce our new leadership team. In each upcoming entry, we will highlight someone new. Be sure to check back often! To get us started, we recently sat down with co-director, Laura Lazarus, and asked her to answer a few questions for us. Here's what she had to say: How long have you been a Kindergarten teacher? I've worked at The Town School as a Kindergarten teacher for 9 years! My first class graduates 8th grade this year and I can't believe it. Bring on the tissues at graduation! Wow! Nine years is a long time. What do you love about working with young children? How long do I have to answer the question? I love how young children bring an honest curiosity to school every day, love to see children have "ah-ha" moments when they discover something new, and love to be able to sing and dance every day at my job. What do you love about camp? I grew up going to day camp and sleep away camp, and then I worked at SummerSault before I started working at Town. I love how camp is another community where kids have fun and get to experience lots of activities. I still talk to my camp friends! What is something we might not know about you? I love to do anything active, especially outside! I have run 2 marathons and completed 5 triathlons (including the NYC Tri 2 times). I'm sure I'll jump into the pool with the kids this summer!
